Zakat – Purification of Wealth and Heart
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, a divine obligation that purifies wealth and nurtures compassion in society. Rooted in the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Zakat serves both spiritual and social purposes: it purifies the giver’s heart from greed, supports the needy, and strengthens the bonds within the Muslim community.
Every eligible Muslim is required to pay Zakat annually if their net wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. The standard Nisab is the value of 87.48 grams of gold. The common rate for Zakat on savings, gold, silver, and business assets is 2.5%.
