Title Case vs Capitalize Words

Title Case follows headline style: it capitalizes every word except short words such as “a”, “an”, “the”, “and”, “or”, “of”, “to” and “in” – unless they are the first word. Capitalize Words simply capitalizes the first letter of every word. Style guides (AP, Chicago, APA) differ on details such as whether to capitalize prepositions of four or more letters, so check your publication’s rules for important headlines.

Things to check after converting

  • Names and acronyms: lowercase and sentence case also lowercase “NASA”, “iPhone” or “McDonald”. Fix these by hand.
  • Sentence case capitalizes the first letter after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations such as “e.g.” can trigger an extra capital.
  • camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case and kebab-case remove punctuation and accented characters, because they are meant for code and URLs.
