FBA vs FBM per unit

Storage uses Amazon’s standard-size monthly rates per cubic foot (2026). Fulfillment fees depend on size tier, weight and category and change regularly, so enter the exact figure from Amazon’s own calculator. Excludes the $39.99/month Professional plan, income tax and aged-inventory surcharges.
FBA or FBM?
With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) you send stock to Amazon’s warehouses and Amazon picks, packs, ships and handles returns for a fulfillment fee per unit plus monthly storage. With Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) you store and ship orders yourself. Both pay the same referral fee. This calculator puts both side by side for one product, so you can see which leaves more profit per unit.
The fees in the calculation
- Referral fee: a percentage of the selling price, most often 15% (8–15% in many categories, some higher), with a minimum of $0.30 in most categories. Check the exact rate for your category in Seller Central.
- FBA fulfillment fee: a fixed fee per unit that depends on the size tier (small standard, large standard, large bulky…), shipping weight and sometimes price. Amazon changes these tables every year, so enter the figure that Amazon’s Revenue Calculator shows for your ASIN or dimensions.
- Monthly storage: charged per cubic foot of average daily inventory. For standard-size items it is $0.78 per cubic foot from January to September and $2.40 from October to December. The calculator works out your item’s volume from its dimensions.
- Inbound costs: freight to Amazon’s warehouses and any inbound placement fee, per unit.
- Advertising and returns: sponsored-product spend per sale and an allowance for returned or damaged units are often the costs that decide whether a product is profitable.
Worked example (default values)
A $29.99 product that costs $7.50 landed: referral fee $4.50, advertising $3.00, returns $0.90. With FBA ($5.40 fulfillment, $0.60 inbound, about $0.16 storage for two months) the profit is about $7.93 per unit (26%). With FBM ($5.20 shipping, $1.25 packing) it is about $7.64. The difference is small, so speed, Prime eligibility and your own time decide.
Costs not included
- The Professional selling plan ($39.99 per month) – spread it over your monthly units.
- Aged-inventory surcharges for stock stored too long, low-inventory-level fees and removal or disposal fees.
- Prep, labelling and photography, and income tax.
