How this summarizer works

This is an extractive summarizer. It does not rewrite your text or invent new sentences. It picks the sentences that carry the most information and shows them in their original order, so every line of the summary is something the author actually wrote.

  1. The text is split into sentences and paragraphs.
  2. Common words (“the”, “and”, “is”) are ignored, and each remaining word is weighted by how often it appears in the whole text and how many sentences it appears in. Words that define the topic score high.
  3. Each sentence gets the sum of its word weights, adjusted for length. The first sentence and the opening sentence of each paragraph get a small bonus, because writers usually put the main point there.
  4. The top sentences are chosen, skipping any that repeat a sentence already picked, and put back in their original order.

Tips for a better summary

  • Keep paragraph breaks when you paste. They help the tool find topic sentences.
  • For a 1,000-word article, 4–6 sentences usually give a good overview. Move the slider to make it shorter or longer.
  • Use Bullet points for notes and Paragraph for an abstract or a quick email.
  • Extractive summaries work best on news, reports, essays and documentation. Fiction, poems and dialogue do not summarize well this way.

Limits

Because nothing is rewritten, the summary can contain words like “this” or “he” that refer back to a sentence that was left out. Read it once and adjust before you share it. The scoring is designed for English; other languages work only roughly. For a word and sentence count of your text, use the Word Counter.
