What is Base64?

Base64 turns any data into a string made of 64 safe characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /, with = as padding. It is used where only plain text can travel, such as email attachments (MIME), JSON and XML payloads, HTTP Basic authentication headers and small images embedded in CSS as data URIs.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or private data.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Type or paste your text. The result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result, or click Use result as input to reverse it.

Good to know

  • Size: Base64 output is about 33% larger than the original, because every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
  • Unicode: text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so accents, Urdu, Arabic and emoji round-trip correctly.
  • URL-safe Base64 (RFC 4648 §5) replaces + with - and / with _ and drops padding. It is used in JWT tokens and in URLs. The decoder accepts both forms.
  • To encode an image or file, use the Image to Base64 converter.

Example

The text Hello, Toolfix! encodes to SGVsbG8sIFRvb2xmaXgh.
