How Much Does it Really Cost to Sell on Etsy?

Etsy is the ultimate marketplace for handmade, vintage, and craft items. However, managing a profitable Etsy shop requires a deep understanding of its multi-layered fee structure. From listing fees to transaction costs and offsite ads, the deductions can add up quickly. Our Etsy Profit Calculator helps you price your handcrafted products perfectly.

Breakdown of Etsy Fees

To accurately calculate your take-home profit, you must account for the following standard Etsy fees:

  • Listing Fee: Etsy charges a flat US$0.20 to publish or renew a listing. This fee applies regardless of whether the item sells.
  • Transaction Fee: When your item sells, Etsy takes a 6.5% cut of the total order amount (including the item price, shipping, and gift wrapping).
  • Payment Processing Fee: If you use Etsy Payments, you will pay a processing fee, which in the US is 3% + US$0.25 per order (4% + €0.30 in Spain and most of the EU, 4% + £0.20 in the UK).
  • Offsite Ads Fee (Optional/Mandatory): Etsy advertises your listings on Google and Facebook. If a buyer clicks an ad and buys from your shop within 30 days, you pay a 15% fee (or 12% once your shop has made over US$10,000 in a year), capped at US$100 per order.

Pricing Strategies for Etsy Sellers

When pricing handmade goods, do not just cover the cost of your raw materials. You must factor in your hourly labor rate, packaging costs, and all the platform fees mentioned above. A common rule of thumb is to calculate your total cost of production (materials + labor) and multiply it by at least 2.5x to set your retail price. Use our calculator above to simulate different pricing tiers and guarantee your profit margin.
