What is Schema Markup (JSON-LD)?

Schema markup is a form of microdata that helps search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo parse and understand your website's content more effectively. Instead of forcing algorithms to guess whether a string of numbers is a phone number, a price, or a zip code, Schema Markup explicitly defines the context using a standardized vocabulary developed by Schema.org.

Why JSON-LD is the Recommended Format

There are multiple ways to implement structured data, including Microdata and RDFa, which require you to inject tags directly into your HTML elements. However, Google officially recommends using JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data). JSON-LD is far cleaner because it resides entirely within a single <script> tag in the head or body of your webpage, completely separated from your HTML layout.

Unlocking Google Rich Results

Implementing valid Schema markup is the only way to achieve coveted "Rich Results" in Google search. These visual enhancements drastically improve your Click-Through Rate (CTR). Common rich results include:

  • Review Stars: Displaying 5-star ratings directly under your search snippet.
  • FAQ Dropdowns: Showing commonly asked questions and answers immediately on the search results page.
  • Recipe Cards: Displaying cooking time, calories, and a mouth-watering thumbnail image.
