Calculating the electricity cost of running any home appliance helps you budget your utility bills and identify power-hungry devices. Follow these steps:

Utility companies bill you based on Kilowatt-hours (kWh). Here is the three-step formula to calculate costs manually:

Appliance energy draw varies, but here are the typical ranges:
A kilowatt-hour is a measure of energy. It represents the energy consumed by a 1,000-watt appliance running for exactly one hour. For example, running a 100-watt lightbulb for 10 hours consumes 1 kWh of electricity (100 × 10 = 1,000 watt-hours = 1 kWh).
Look for a metal label, stamp, or sticker on the back, bottom, or cord of the appliance. It will state the power draw in watts (W) or amps (A) and volts (V). If only amps are listed, calculate watts using: Watts = Amps × Volts (e.g., 10 amps on a standard US 120V outlet is 1,200 watts).
Heating and cooling systems (HVAC) consume the most electricity in a typical home, accounting for nearly 50% of energy usage. Other high-consumption appliances include water heaters, refrigerators, clothes dryers, and electric ovens because they run for long periods or generate intense heat.
To reduce power consumption, switch to energy-efficient appliances (look for the Energy Star logo), replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, use programmable thermostats to optimize heating and cooling, and unplug electronics when not in use to avoid phantom power draw.
