The Formula for Final Exam Scores

For example, if you have an 80% in class, the final is worth 25%, and you want a B (83%):

You have a 90% in class, but the final exam is worth 40% of your grade. You want to maintain an A- (90%). Formula: [90 − (90 × 0.60)] ÷ 0.40 = [90 − 54] ÷ 0.40 = 36 ÷ 0.40 = 90%. You need exactly 90% on the final to maintain your grade.

Example 2: Securing a Pass (C)

You have a 72% in class, the final is worth 20%, and you just need a 70% to pass. Formula: [70 − (72 × 0.80)] ÷ 0.20 = [70 − 57.6] ÷ 0.20 = 12.4 ÷ 0.20 = 62%. You need a 62% to pass the course.

Example 3: The Impossible A

You have a 78% in class, the final is worth 15%, and you want a 90% (A). Formula: [90 − (78 × 0.85)] ÷ 0.15 = [90 − 66.3] ÷ 0.15 = 23.7 ÷ 0.15 = 158%. Since 158% is impossible without massive extra credit, you cannot get an A in this class.

Subtract this from the total points possible (including the final exam) multiplied by your desired percentage. The result is the points needed on the final. Example: you want 90% in a 500-point class. You currently have 360 points out of 400. You need (0.90 × 500) − 360 = 450 − 360 = 90 points on the 100-point final.
