What keyword clustering is for
Keyword research tools give you long lists of phrases, many of which mean almost the same thing: “running shoes for women”, “women’s running shoes”, “best women’s running shoes”. Writing a separate page for each one splits your effort and makes your own pages compete with each other. Clustering groups related keywords so you can plan one strong page per topic and use the other phrases as headings and supporting terms on that page.
How this tool groups keywords
- Each keyword is split into words. Small words such as “the”, “for”, “how” and “best” are ignored, and word endings are simplified so that “shoe” and “shoes” match.
- Keywords are processed from the highest search volume down. Each one joins the existing group whose words overlap most with it, if the overlap is above the chosen strictness; otherwise it starts a new group.
- Each group is named after its highest-volume keyword – usually the best target for the page title.
The tool also labels obvious search intent: Learn (how to, what is, guide), Compare (best, vs, review), Buy (price, buy, cheap) and Local (near me). Keywords with different intents often need different pages even when the words are similar – a buying guide and a product page are not the same thing.
Limits
This is word-based grouping, done entirely in your browser. It does not check Google’s results, so it cannot know that two phrases with different words (“sneakers” and “trainers”) mean the same, or that two similar phrases show completely different results. Professional tools cluster by comparing the top 10 Google results for each keyword. Use the groups as a starting point, then search the main keyword of each group yourself to confirm what kind of page ranks.
Tips
- Paste volumes from your keyword tool so the biggest topics appear first.
- Try Loose to find broad topics for category or pillar pages, and Strict to plan individual articles.
- Keywords left alone in a group of one are often long-tail questions – good for FAQ sections.
