How to Calculate Your Semester Grade
Most high school and college courses weight your grade by category. For example, homework might be worth 20%, quizzes 30%, and exams 50%. Our free semester grade calculator helps you determine your overall class grade by inputting your scores and their respective category weights. Follow these steps:
- List your grade categories — Enter the name of each category (e.g., Homework).
- Input your score — Enter the average percentage score you have for that category.
- Input the category weight — Enter the percentage weight assigned to that category in your course syllabus.
- Click “Calculate Class Grade” — The tool will display your overall course grade, letter grade, and GPA equivalent.
The Formula for Weighted Course Grades
To calculate a weighted class grade manually, use this formula:
Weighted Grade = Σ(Category Score × Category Weight) ÷ Σ(Category Weights)
For example, if you have:
- Homework (20% weight): average score of 95% (Quality points = 95 × 20 = 1,900)
- Quizzes (30% weight): average score of 88% (Quality points = 88 × 30 = 2,640)
- Exams (50% weight): average score of 82% (Quality points = 82 × 50 = 4,100)
- Total Quality Points = 1,900 + 2,640 + 4,100 = 8,640
- Total Weight = 20 + 30 + 50 = 100%
- Overall Grade = 8,640 ÷ 100 = 86.4% (Letter Grade: B)
What if Category Weights Don’t Total 100%?
Our calculator automatically adjusts for situations where category weights do not add up to 100% (e.g., if you haven’t taken the final exam yet, so 20% of the class grade is still unearned). The calculator divides the weighted points by the sum of the active weights to show your current grade in the class.

What is my grade if I got 18 out of 20 on a quiz?
To convert raw points to a percentage score: divide the points earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. For example, 18 ÷ 20 = 0.90 × 100 = 90%. Use this percentage score in the category input.

How are letter grades converted to GPA?
