Typing Speed Test
Test your typing speed (WPM) and accuracy with our interactive trainer
How to Test Your Typing Speed (WPM)
Testing your typing speed regularly helps you monitor your improvements as you practice touch-typing. Follow these steps to start the test:
- Click “Start Typing Test” — This will load a random paragraph and activate the text box.
- Start typing — The timer starts as soon as you type the first character. The characters above will change color to show accuracy (green for correct, red/shaded for errors).
- Complete the test — Finish typing the paragraph or wait for the 60-second timer to run out. The tool will calculate your Words Per Minute (WPM) and accuracy.
How is WPM Calculated?
In typing metrics, a “word” is standardized as **5 characters** (including spaces). This standardizes word length, preventing scores from fluctuating based on the complexity of the text used.
The formula for WPM is:
WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time Elapsed (Minutes)
For example, if you type 200 characters in 1 minute:
- Standard words typed = 200 ÷ 5 = 40 words.
- WPM = 40 ÷ 1 = 40 WPM.
If you made errors, **Net WPM** is calculated by subtracting uncorrected errors from the total: Net WPM = (Gross Words − Uncorrected Errors) ÷ Time.
Standard Typing Speed Categories
Where does your typing speed rank? Here are the standard categories:
- Under 30 WPM (Slow): Indicates hunt-and-peck typing with two fingers. Practicing touch-typing will easily double this speed.
- 30 to 50 WPM (Average): The typical typing speed for casual keyboard users.
- 50 to 80 WPM (Fast): Excellent professional speed. Required for transcriptionists, secretaries, and data entry roles.
- Over 80 WPM (Pro/Elite): Highly skilled speed. Elite typists use advanced touch-typing mechanics with all 10 fingers. The world record exceeds 210 WPM!
Tips to Increase Your Typing Speed
- Use 10 fingers (Touch-Typing): Do not look at the keyboard. Position your fingers on the “home row” keys (ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right hand). Look at the screen instead of your hands.
- Focus on accuracy first: Do not try to type fast if it leads to errors. Correcting errors slows you down far more than typing carefully. Speed follows accuracy.
- Keep a relaxed posture: Sit straight, keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle, and place your keyboard at a comfortable height. Relaxation reduces muscle fatigue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this typing test free?
Yes. Our online typing test is 100% free with no signups, accounts, or software installations required. You can repeat the test as many times as you like to practice.
What is a good typing accuracy score?
A good typing accuracy score is **95% or higher**. Professional settings typically require at least 98% accuracy. Typing quickly with low accuracy is inefficient because correcting errors consumes valuable time.
What does WPM stand for?
WPM stands for **Words Per Minute**. It is the standard unit of measurement used to assess typing speed on a keyboard.
Can kids take this typing test?
Yes. The paragraphs are selected to be child-friendly, making this test an excellent learning game for students and children learning computer literacy skills.
