The Kilowatt-Hour (kWh) Formula

Utility bills are calculated in Kilowatt-hours (kWh). Here is the formula to convert wattage and hours to energy and cost:

  1. Calculate Daily Energy: Daily kWh = (Wattage × Hours) ÷ 1,000
  2. Calculate Period Energy: Total kWh = Daily kWh × Days
  3. Calculate Running Cost: Total Cost = Total kWh × Rate per kWh

For example, if you run a 1,200-watt microwave for 0.5 hours (30 minutes) daily at $0.16 per kWh for 30 days:

  • Daily kWh = (1,200 × 0.5) ÷ 1,000 = 0.6 kWh
  • Total kWh = 0.6 × 30 = 18 kWh
